Classical Definition

The Yoga that fulfils all purposes

Sarvarthasiddhi Yoga is formed when the Moon occupies certain nakshatras (lunar mansions) on their corresponding weekdays. The name encapsulates its scope: sarva (all), artha (purpose/wealth), siddhi (accomplishment). When this alignment occurs, Vedic tradition holds that any auspicious undertaking begun during this window carries the full support of cosmic time.

Unlike many muhurta yogas that are restricted to specific activities, Sarvarthasiddhi is explicitly described in the classical literature as universally applicable - making it one of the most prized configurations in the Vedic time-selection system.

भानुवारे तु हस्तोऽश्विन्युत्तरात्रितयं मूलम्।

- Muhurta Chintamani, Yoga Prakarana

“On Sunday: Hasta, Ashwini, the three Uttara nakshatras (Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada), and Moola. On Monday: Shravana, Anuradha, Mrigashira, Rohini, and Punarvasu…”

In the Vedic worldview, time itself is sacred (Kala Brahman). Sarvarthasiddhi represents a moment when the cosmic forces of the weekday planet and the lunar mansion are in harmonious resonance - creating a window in which human intentions align with the larger rhythms of the universe.

Formation Rules

How Sarvarthasiddhi Yoga forms

I
PRIMARY RULE

Sunrise Nakshatra

The Moon must occupy one of the prescribed nakshatras at the moment of local sunrise. The weekday (Vara) is determined by this same sunrise moment, following the Vedic convention.

II
DURATION RULE

Duration Consideration

The yoga is active from sunrise until the Moon exits the valid nakshatra, or until sunset - whichever comes first. A yoga lasting more than 3 Ghatika (72 minutes) is considered practically usable for muhurta purposes.

III
OPTIONAL ENHANCEMENT

Ghati / Muhurta Count

When Sarvarthasiddhi spans at least 1 Muhurta (48 minutes), it can be combined with a favourable Lagna to create a compound muhurta. Three or more Ghatikas of yoga duration is the ideal threshold recommended in Muhurta Chintamani.

Limitations & Prohibited Activities

मंगलवार

Tuesday - Mangala Vara

  • Long-term financial contracts
  • Marriage ceremonies
  • Peaceful / diplomatic negotiations
  • Travel for reconciliation

Mars rules Tuesday. While Sarvarthasiddhi gives general auspiciousness, the Mangala energy amplifies Mars-natured activities. Peaceful, domestic activities are better deferred.

शनिवार

Saturday - Shani Vara

  • Beginning new ventures (prefer Mon/Thu/Fri)
  • Marriage & engagement ceremonies
  • Major medical treatments
  • Starting new spiritual practices

Shani Vara Sarvarthasiddhi is auspicious for labour and groundwork, but classical texts advise against festivities, as Saturn's energy promotes endurance over celebration.

General Precautions

  • Check Lagna chart independently
  • Avoid Rahu Kaal within the yoga window
  • Verify no Mrityu Yoga coexistence
  • Confirm Moon is not combust (near Sun)

Sarvarthasiddhi is a foundational yoga, not an overriding guarantee. Classical muhurta also weighs Tithi, Karana, 27-fold Yoga, Hora, and Lagna. Use this as the primary filter, then refine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Scholarly Questions & Answers

Yes. The Panchang yogas are calculated from distinct elements: Sarvarthasiddhi depends on Vara-Nakshatra, while Mrityu Yoga arises from Tithi-Vara-Nakshatra combinations enumerated in Muhurta Chintamani. Their concurrent occurrence requires careful analysis. Classical texts advise that when Mrityu Yoga coexists, Sarvarthasiddhi's auspiciousness is moderated and one should rely on the Lagna chart to determine the final muhurta quality.

Absolutely. Sarvarthasiddhi Yoga establishes the foundational auspiciousness of a day, but it is not a complete muhurta by itself. Muhurta Chintamani (Lagna Prakarana) requires the Lagna (rising sign) to be free from malefic aspects, particularly from Mars and Saturn, and the Lagna lord should not be in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house. The best practice is to select a Lagnadhi Yoga (strong Lagna) within the Sarvarthasiddhi window.

Classical texts present nuanced views. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Muhurta Adhyaya) notes that a debilitated Moon reduces the functional potency of any Panchang yoga. However, Muhurta Chintamani adds that if Sarvarthasiddhi Yoga is present and the Moon occupies a favourable nakshatra within Vrishchika (specifically Vishakha or Jyeshtha), the yoga's benefit is preserved for worldly activities even if spiritual rites are better postponed. The final assessment depends on the specific purpose and the strength of the Lagna.

Pitru Tarpanam is classically advised on Amavasya, Mahalaya Paksha, or the death anniversary (Punyatithi). Sarvarthasiddhi Yoga does not contraindicate it - there is no classical prohibition. However, Dharmasindhu (Pitru Karma Prakarana) specifies that Pitru rites are governed primarily by Tithi (especially Amavasya), so Sarvarthasiddhi adds an auspicious overlay when it coincides with the correct Tithi. On non-Amavasya days, Tarpanam for specific purposes (like Griha Shanti) is indeed enhanced by this yoga.

When Sarvarthasiddhi Yoga falls on Amavasya (New Moon), it is considered exceptionally potent for ancestral propitiation, Pitru Puja, and beginning long-term spiritual practices. Classical muhurta texts note that the combination of Amavasya + Sarvarthasiddhi + correct Nakshatra creates a Maha Muhurta capable of conferring results equivalent to years of regular practice. Such combinations occur roughly 2-3 times annually and are highlighted in traditional Panchangams.

Jyotisha Shastra applies equally to Dharma (religious), Artha (material/financial), Kama (personal desires), and Moksha (spiritual liberation) - the four Purusharthas. Sarvarthasiddhi, meaning "accomplishment of all purposes," is explicitly described in classical texts as suitable for any important worldly beginning: business registrations, property transactions, medical procedures, long journeys, and contracts. Modern Vedic astrologers widely use it for such secular applications, as it represents an auspicious alignment independent of religious affiliation.

✦ ✦ ✦

Sarvarthasiddhi Yoga reminds us that the cosmos itself creates windows of opportunity - moments when the planetary forces align to support our efforts. By choosing our beginnings wisely and aligning action with auspicious time, we participate consciously in the dance of Kala (time) as described in the ancient Vedic Muhurta Shastra.
