Chaughadiya
The Eight Time Divisions of the Vedic Day
What is Chaughadiya?
Chaughadiya (from Sanskrit Chatur-ghadi, meaning four ghatikas) is a traditional Vedic time division system where each day and night is divided into eight equal parts called Chaughadiyas. Each segment is ruled by a specific planetary influence, determining whether the period is auspicious, inauspicious, or neutral for various activities.
This system is widely used across North India, Maharashtra, and Gujarat for selecting auspicious starting times without the complexity of a full Muhurta calculation. It is the quickest practical tool for everyday Muhurta selection.
