Guru-Pushya Yoga (not to be confused with Guru Pushya — the Thursday Moon yoga) occurs when JUPITER itself transits through Pushya Nakshatra. Jupiter takes approximately 11.86 years to complete one orbit of the Sun. Since it spends roughly one year in each rashi, it returns to Pushya Nakshatra — which spans 13°20' within Cancer — only once every ~12 years. The actual time Jupiter spends in Pushya during each visit ranges from ~4 to 10 months depending on retrograde behaviour, making this an extraordinarily rare and sacred muhurta window.

These are two entirely different yogas. The popular "Guru Pushya Yoga" (observed on shopping days across India) occurs when the MOON transits Pushya Nakshatra on a Thursday (Guruvara). Since the Moon completes its full cycle in ~27 days, this happens multiple times per year, whenever the Moon-in-Pushya and Thursday coincide. The Guru-Pushya Yoga on this page is based on JUPITER — the planet, not the weekday — transiting through Pushya. This is rarer by a factor of roughly 144× (12 years vs monthly occurrence), and is considered the supreme form of all Pushya yogas.

Jupiter's retrograde motion during its Pushya transit is not inauspicious — it is a feature, not a flaw. When Jupiter retrogrades back into Pushya (having partially exited into Ashlesha), the re-entry is considered a second, intensified blessing. The planet returns to pour its grace a second time. Retrograde Jupiter in Pushya amplifies all Jupiterian themes: learning, dharma, wisdom, spiritual practice, and legitimate wealth accumulation. The overall transit window calculated on this page spans the first entry to the final exit, including all retrograde re-entries.

Pushya Nakshatra spans only 13°20' (13.33 degrees) of the zodiac — a narrow belt within Cancer. Jupiter moves at approximately 0.083°/day direct, meaning it naturally traverses Pushya in about 4 months when moving direct. However, retrograde episodes extend this. Jupiter may exit into the next nakshatra (Ashlesha) and then retrograde BACK into Pushya, effectively spending time in this nakshatra in two or three separate windows within the same year. The TOTAL calendar window (first entry to final exit) is therefore 4–10 months. It is Jupiter's PRESENCE in Pushya — direct or retrograde — that constitutes Guru-Pushya Yoga.

Marriage under Pushya Nakshatra is explicitly prohibited in most classical muhurta texts, including Muhurta Chintamani, regardless of the transiting graha. This prohibition derives from Pushya's deity being Brihaspati — the celibate bachelor preceptor — and its symbolism (the udder) which relates to nourishment rather than matrimonial union. The extraordinary rarity of Guru-Pushya Yoga does NOT override this prohibition. Marriage should never be performed when Pushya Nakshatra is active at the time of the ceremony. All other activities, however, receive the full amplification of this supreme yoga.

Classical Jyotisha texts are unanimous: the single most powerful activity during Guru-Pushya Yoga is VIDYA ARAMBHA — the commencement of learning. This includes school or university enrolment, initiation into Vedic study, taking on a guru, beginning preparation for competitive exams, or starting any long-term educational pursuit. Brihaspati (Jupiter) is the deity of Pushya, the planet of wisdom, and the preceptor of the gods. When he returns to his own nakshatra, the entire field of learning is supremely supported. Second in importance is Lakshmi Puja, gold acquisition, and legitimate business ventures.

Yes — and the combinations can be extraordinary. When Guru-Pushya Yoga overlaps with Sarvarthasiddhi Yoga (Moon in specific nakshatra on corresponding weekday), the muhurta is considered "Sarva-Siddhi-Daya" — capable of fulfilling all intentions. If it overlaps with Guru Pushya Yoga (Moon in Pushya on Thursday), the triple conjunction of Jupiter-in-Pushya + Moon-in-Pushya + Thursday is among the rarest and most auspicious moments in Jyotisha. During the ~4–10 month window of Guru-Pushya Yoga, regular Sarvarthasiddhi yogas occurring within it are all elevated to a higher order of auspiciousness.

Classical guidance prioritises Guru-Diksha — formal initiation by a qualified teacher — as the supreme use of Guru-Pushya Yoga. The word "Guru" means both Jupiter and Teacher; Pushya's deity Brihaspati is the primordial Guru. Beginning a mantra sadhana, Vedic study, spiritual mentorship, or the Gayatri practice at the moment of Jupiter's entry into Pushya is said to ensure lifelong success in that discipline.
