Pradosham Vrat
Trayodashi Evening Shiva Worship
What is Pradosham?
Pradosham (Sanskrit: Pradosha, "the forgiving one" or "the evening twilight") is the auspicious twilight period on the 13th Tithi (Trayodashi) of both fortnights each lunar month. During this 3-hour window, from approximately 90 minutes before sunset to 90 minutes after sunset, Lord Shiva is believed to perform his cosmic dance (Tandava) in a state of supreme bliss. All other deities are said to gather to witness this divine performance.
The Shiva Purana (Vidyeshvara Samhita) contains an extensive narrative about the origin of Pradosh Vrat. A widowed queen and her son, having lost everything, observed Pradosh Vrat with complete devotion. Lord Shiva appeared personally to restore their kingdom and grant boons. This story establishes the Vrat's efficacy for removing poverty, illness, and all forms of misfortune.
The term "Pradosha" also refers to the act of forgiving or absolving. Shiva, in his aspect as Maheshvara (the supreme ruler) and Mrityunjaya (the conqueror of death), is particularly accessible during this period. Devotees who cannot perform elaborate daily Shiva worship throughout the month can concentrate their devotion into this twice-monthly observance with proportionally greater effect.
Special Pradosh Types
Soma Pradosh (Monday)
The most powerful Pradosh Vrat. The combination of Monday (ruled by Shiva as Chandrashekhar, the Moon-crowned one) and Trayodashi creates an exceptionally potent window for Shiva worship. Observing Soma Pradosh regularly is said to remove all sins and grant liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
Shani Pradosh (Saturday)
Powerfully effective for removing the malefic effects of Saturn (Shani) in the birth chart. Saturn is a devotee of Shiva, and Shiva worship on Saturn-ruled Pradosh specifically addresses Shani Dosha, Sade Sati, and other Saturn-related difficulties in the horoscope.
Bhaum Pradosh (Tuesday)
Effective for removing Mars-related afflictions including Mangal Dosha and health issues related to blood, muscles, and accidents. Offers to Lord Ganesha (as Mars is linked to Ganesha's realm) are additionally recommended on this Pradosh.
Pradosh Puja Vidhi
The observant takes a ritual bath before sunset on the Pradosh day. The puja begins approximately 45 minutes before sunset and should be completed within the twilight window. A Shivalinga is bathed (Abhisheka) with five sacred substances: milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, and rose water. Bilva leaves (also called Bel leaves, most sacred to Shiva) are offered along with white flowers.
The Shiva Panchakshara Mantra "Om Namah Shivaya" is chanted 108 times during Abhisheka. The Pradosh Vrat Katha (narrative of the Vrat's origin from Shiva Purana) is recited. Prasad of fruits, coconut, and sweets is distributed. The fast observed throughout the day is broken after completing the puja.
In South Indian tradition, particularly in Tamil Nadu, circumambulation (Pradakshina) of the Shiva temple is performed during Pradosh time. Devotees walk around the Shiva sanctum 7 times while chanting. In Kerala, Pradosham at the Vadakkunnathan temple in Thrissur and other major Shiva temples draws thousands of devotees who fast and observe the evening rites together.
