The Origin of This Work · उद्गम
Before Maharishi Parasara speaks a single word of astrology, he does something that every true scholar must do. He acknowledges his source. Not his own intellect. Not his years of study. He bows to Brahma, to Saraswati Devi, to Surya. This is the first lesson of Jyotish. Humility precedes knowledge.
O Brahmin, well and rightly have you asked · for the benefit and welfare of all beings in this world
Now I · having first invoked the Supreme Brahman · and His Shakti · the goddess Saraswati · once again
✦ Bhashya ·
"The question you have brought is not merely yours. It belongs to the world."
Parasara Muni does not say: your question is interesting, or your question is correct. He says it is auspicious. Sadhu. Because it was asked not for personal gain but for loka-anugraha. For the upliftment of all. This is the spirit in which Jyotish was always meant to be practised. Not as a tool of personal power. As an act of service. At VedicNakshatra, this is the only intention with which I sit before a Kundali.

Having offered obeisance to Surya · lord of all planets · the very cause of the creation of this universe
I shall now expound this eye of the Vedas · exactly as I received it from the mouth of Brahma himself
✦ Bhashya ·
"Vedanaynam. The eye of the Vedas. This is what Jyotish is. Not a fortune-telling system. The very organ through which the Vedas see."
Parasara says: I heard this from Brahma. Not I discovered it. Not I developed it. I heard it. This one word, shrutam, carries the entire weight of the Guru-Shishya parampara. Knowledge in Jyotish has never been invented. It has only ever been transmitted. I stand in that same line of transmission today. What I offer you is not my understanding. It is the shastra, passing through me, arriving at you.

To Whom This Is Given · अधिकारी विवेक
Parasara Muni now sets the most sacred boundary in all of Jyotish. Before technique. Before calculation. Before a single graha is named. He speaks of the adhikari. The one who is qualified to receive this knowledge.
To one who is peaceful in nature · devoted to the Guru · who speaks truth at all times
To one who holds living faith in the sacred · this alone is to be given · only then shall the highest good be attained
✦ Bhashya ·
"Four qualities. Shanta. Guru-bhakta. Satyavadin. Aastika. Not four requirements. Four doors."
Parasara is not asking for a perfect human being. He is asking for a sincere one. Shanta does not mean without troubles. It means the mind is not at war with itself. Guru-bhakta does not mean blind obedience. It means the seeker knows he does not know everything, and is willing to learn. Satyavadin does not mean perfect honesty. It means truth is the aspiration, always. Aastika does not demand any particular religion. It means the seeker acknowledges that there is something beyond the merely visible, and that this something deserves reverence. If you arrive at VedicNakshatra with these four dispositions alive in your heart, even imperfectly, this knowledge is yours.
· Pt. Dr. Pankaj Madhav
It must never be given to one who serves another's agenda · nor to an atheist · nor to one who is deceitful
If given to such a one · suffering arises daily · of this there is absolutely no doubt
✦ Bhashya ·
"Natra samshayah. There is no doubt in this. Parasara leaves no room for interpretation."
This shloka is often misread as harshness. It is not. It is compassion of the highest order. Jyotish in the hands of a shatha, a cunning person, does not merely fail to help. It causes daily suffering. To the one who receives it wrongly, and to the tradition itself. Para-shishya here means one who comes not to learn but to extract and exploit. Nastika here is not about religion. It is about the one who has no reverence for anything beyond himself. Giving light to one who will only use it to cast shadows is not generosity. It is negligence. This is why at VedicNakshatra, I do not offer guidance to those who seek it as entertainment, or as a weapon, or as a shortcut around their own dharma.
