What is Rahu Kaal?
Rahu Kaal (also spelled Rahu Kalam) is a specific period within each day considered inauspicious for beginning new ventures, signing contracts, or undertaking important tasks. It derives its name from Rahu, one of the two shadow planets (Chhaya Graha) in Vedic astrology. Rahu is the north lunar node, associated with illusion, sudden events, and karmic disruption.
The concept originates from Muhurta Chintamani and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, where certain time segments of the day are ruled by malefic influences. Activities commenced during Rahu Kaal are believed to face obstacles, delays, or unfavorable outcomes.
Calculation Method
The duration from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts. Each part spans approximately 1.5 hours for a 12-hour day. The Rahu Kaal falls on a specific part depending on the weekday as per the classical mnemonic: "Mother Saw Father Wearing The Turban Suddenly" (Mon=2, Sat=3, Fri=4, Wed=5, Thu=6, Tue=7, Sun=8).
Part duration = (Sunset time - Sunrise time) divided by 8
Rahu Kaal start = Sunrise + (Part number - 1) multiplied by Part duration
Rahu Kaal end = Start + Part duration
Weekday Reference Table
Approximate timings are for standard 6:00 AM sunrise and 6:00 PM sunset. Actual timings vary by location and season.
What to Avoid During Rahu Kaal
Starting new business ventures or signing contracts
Conducting marriage ceremonies or engagement rituals
Beginning journeys for important purposes
Making large financial investments or purchases
Initiating medical treatments or surgical procedures
Performing sacred rituals requiring an auspicious Muhurta
Remedies and Exceptions
While Rahu Kaal is generally avoided, certain activities are permitted or even considered beneficial. Rahu rules foreign travel, technology, mass media, and sudden gains. Activities related to these domains may sometimes be performed during Rahu Kaal with proper remedies.
The classical remedy is to worship Lord Ganesha (Vignaharta, the remover of obstacles) before beginning any task. Reciting the Rahu Beeja Mantra "Om Raam Rahave Namah" 18 times before starting work during this period is prescribed in Muhurta texts.
