Hora Muhurta
Planetary Hours in Vedic Jyotisha
What is Hora?
Hora (from Sanskrit, related to the Greek "hora" meaning hour) is a system of planetary hours used in Vedic Jyotisha for Muhurta selection. The day is divided into 24 Horas, each ruled by one of the seven visible planets: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn. The first Hora of each day begins at sunrise and is ruled by the planet that lords that weekday.
Unlike equal clock hours, Hora duration varies by season. Each daytime Hora equals one-twelfth of the day length (sunrise to sunset), and each nighttime Hora equals one-twelfth of the night length. The classical text Muhurta Chintamani prescribes specific activities for each planetary Hora.
