Abhijit Muhurta

The Victorious Midday Window of Vedic Jyotisha

Quick Reference

Abhijit Muhurta occurs daily around midday. It begins 24 minutes before the midpoint between sunrise and sunset, and ends 24 minutes after. Total duration: 48 minutes.

What is Abhijit Muhurta?

Abhijit (Sanskrit: "the victorious one") is considered the most universally auspicious Muhurta in Vedic astrology. Unlike other Muhurtas that depend on the day, Nakshatra, and planetary positions, Abhijit Muhurta occurs every single day without exception. It is the period when the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky relative to the local horizon, corresponding to local apparent solar noon.

The Mahabharata (Shanti Parva) and Muhurta Chintamani both extol Abhijit Muhurta as capable of overriding minor inauspicious influences in the Panchang. Lord Vishnu is said to have assumed his Vamana (dwarf) avatar during Abhijit Muhurta, and Lord Krishna selected it for the commencement of the Kurukshetra battle.

Calculation Method

Midpoint = Sunrise + (Sunset - Sunrise) / 2

Abhijit Start = Midpoint - 24 minutes

Abhijit End = Midpoint + 24 minutes

For a location with 6:00 AM sunrise and 6:00 PM sunset, Abhijit Muhurta falls from 11:36 AM to 12:24 PM. The exact timing shifts daily as sunrise and sunset times change with the seasons.

Exception: Wednesday Afternoon

Classical texts note that Abhijit Muhurta on Wednesday afternoon coincides with the transition of Abhijit Nakshatra (the 28th intercalary Nakshatra, between Uttara Ashadha and Shravana). On Wednesdays, some practitioners prefer to use the first half of the Abhijit window only, or shift important ceremonies to Thursday. This exception is noted in Muhurta Chintamani and Brihat Samhita.
