Sanskrit Etymology
The Two Pillars
In Jyotisha, "yoga" denotes a specific planetary configuration that transforms the quality of time. Ravi Yoga is the configuration formed when the Sun occupies one of 9 specific auspicious nakshatras - creating a window of elevated solar grace available to all endeavours.
Root: yuj - to join, to unite, to harness. When the Sun's transit is "yoked" to an auspicious nakshatra, its sovereign light flows through that nakshatra's qualities unobstructed.
The Sacred Nine
Nine Nakshatras of Ravi Yoga
When the Sun transits any of these nine nakshatras, Ravi Yoga is formed. The Sun spends ~13 days in each, making Ravi Yoga active for approximately 120-140 days per year.
Swift beginnings, healing, speed
Seeking, exploration, gentle strength
Renewal, restoration, boundless grace
Nourishment, abundance — also Ravi-Pushya Yoga
Craftsmanship, dexterity, solar artistry
Brilliance, architecture, divine creation
Loyal success, friendship, sustained effort
Root power, transformation, deep investigation
Cosmic completion, safe passage, nourishment
Textual note: Some classical authorities include Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, and Shravana in an expanded list of Ravi Yoga nakshatras. The nine listed above represent the most widely accepted tradition per Muhurta Chintamani and are consistently cited across Jyotisha literature.
Critical Insight
Ravi Yoga Contains Ravi-Pushya Yoga
Ravi-Pushya Yoga is a special case of Ravi Yoga - the specific subset when the Sun is in Pushya. Every day of Ravi-Pushya Yoga is also a day of Ravi Yoga, but not vice versa.
Sun in any of 9 nakshatras - ~120-140 days/year across 9 separate ~13-day windows
Sun specifically in Pushya - exactly ~13 days/year, contained entirely within Ravi Yoga
When Sun is in Pushya, both yogas are simultaneously active. Ravi-Pushya inherits all Ravi Yoga benefits plus Pushya's nourishing quality.

Precautions · सावधानी
Restrictions During Ravi Yoga
Ravi Yoga amplifies solar energy but does NOT override all Panchang restrictions. These specific categories remain applicable regardless of Ravi Yoga's presence.
Marriage Ceremonies
विवाह - Vivah
- ✕Marriage rites during Nakshatras prohibited for Vivah
- ✕Specifically: marriage during Ashlesha, Ardra, Jyeshtha
- ✕Any marriage where the Moon is in an inauspicious nakshatra
- ✕Ravi Yoga does not override Vivah Nakshatras rules
Ravi Yoga improves the quality of time generally but does not override Vivah Nakshatra prohibitions. Always verify the Moon's nakshatra separately for marriage muhurta.
Rahu Kaal Override
राहु काल
- ✕Any new enterprise during Rahu Kaal (~90 min/day)
- ✕Ravi Yoga cannot override Rahu Kaal restriction
- ✕Timing must avoid the Rahu Kaal window
- ✕Verify Rahu Kaal for your time zone
Note: Rahu Kaal applies every day regardless of the prevailing muhurta yoga. Plan important activities outside the Rahu Kaal window even during Ravi Yoga.
Tuesday & Saturday Caution
मंगल / शनि दोष
- ✕New iron/steel purchases on Tuesday
- ✕New vehicle purchases on Saturday
- ✕Ravi Yoga does NOT override weekday restrictions
- ✕Use Sarvarthasiddhi for full override
Ravi Yoga is a nakshatra-based yoga and does not cancel weekday (Vara) dosha. Only Sarvarthasiddhi Yoga fully overrides Tuesday and Saturday restrictions.
Eclipse Override
ग्रहण - Grahan
- ✕Any new enterprise during solar eclipse
- ✕Any new enterprise during lunar eclipse
- ✕Eclipse hours (including suta/moksha) must be avoided
- ✕No muhurta yoga overrides a Grahan
No yoga - however powerful - overrides an eclipse. If a Ravi Yoga period coincides with an eclipse, the eclipse hours are inauspicious. The Yoga resumes full potency after the eclipse ends.
Destructive Intentions
अभिचार कर्म
- ✕Maran rituals (intended harm)
- ✕Ucchatan and Vidveshan rites
- ✕Adversarial legal actions
- ✕Any action whose purpose is harm or destruction
The Sun's amplifying presence during Ravi Yoga intensifies all intentions proportionally. Harmful actions initiated during solar auspiciousness carry greater negative consequences.

“The Sun in an auspicious nakshatra bestows all accomplishments.”
Ravi Yoga is the most democratic of all muhurta yogas - available to everyone approximately 120 days per year. It asks only for awareness: to know when the Sun's sovereign light is passing through a favourable constellation, and to align your most important actions with that natural window of celestial grace.
