Union · Configuration

In Jyotisha, "yoga" denotes a specific planetary configuration that transforms the quality of time. Ravi Yoga is the configuration formed when the Sun occupies one of 9 specific auspicious nakshatras - creating a window of elevated solar grace available to all endeavours.

Root: yuj - to join, to unite, to harness. When the Sun's transit is "yoked" to an auspicious nakshatra, its sovereign light flows through that nakshatra's qualities unobstructed.

The Sacred Nine

Nine Nakshatras of Ravi Yoga

When the Sun transits any of these nine nakshatras, Ravi Yoga is formed. The Sun spends ~13 days in each, making Ravi Yoga active for approximately 120-140 days per year.

Precautions · सावधानी

Restrictions During Ravi Yoga

Ravi Yoga amplifies solar energy but does NOT override all Panchang restrictions. These specific categories remain applicable regardless of Ravi Yoga's presence.

Marriage Ceremonies

विवाह - Vivah

  • Marriage rites during Nakshatras prohibited for Vivah
  • Specifically: marriage during Ashlesha, Ardra, Jyeshtha
  • Any marriage where the Moon is in an inauspicious nakshatra
  • Ravi Yoga does not override Vivah Nakshatras rules

Ravi Yoga improves the quality of time generally but does not override Vivah Nakshatra prohibitions. Always verify the Moon's nakshatra separately for marriage muhurta.

Rahu Kaal Override

राहु काल

  • Any new enterprise during Rahu Kaal (~90 min/day)
  • Ravi Yoga cannot override Rahu Kaal restriction
  • Timing must avoid the Rahu Kaal window
  • Verify Rahu Kaal for your time zone

Note: Rahu Kaal applies every day regardless of the prevailing muhurta yoga. Plan important activities outside the Rahu Kaal window even during Ravi Yoga.

Tuesday & Saturday Caution

मंगल / शनि दोष

  • New iron/steel purchases on Tuesday
  • New vehicle purchases on Saturday
  • Ravi Yoga does NOT override weekday restrictions
  • Use Sarvarthasiddhi for full override

Ravi Yoga is a nakshatra-based yoga and does not cancel weekday (Vara) dosha. Only Sarvarthasiddhi Yoga fully overrides Tuesday and Saturday restrictions.

Eclipse Override

ग्रहण - Grahan

  • Any new enterprise during solar eclipse
  • Any new enterprise during lunar eclipse
  • Eclipse hours (including suta/moksha) must be avoided
  • No muhurta yoga overrides a Grahan

No yoga - however powerful - overrides an eclipse. If a Ravi Yoga period coincides with an eclipse, the eclipse hours are inauspicious. The Yoga resumes full potency after the eclipse ends.

Destructive Intentions

अभिचार कर्म

  • Maran rituals (intended harm)
  • Ucchatan and Vidveshan rites
  • Adversarial legal actions
  • Any action whose purpose is harm or destruction

The Sun's amplifying presence during Ravi Yoga intensifies all intentions proportionally. Harmful actions initiated during solar auspiciousness carry greater negative consequences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Scholarly Questions & Answers

What exactly is Ravi Yoga - and is it the same as Ravi Yoga in birth charts?

These are two different things. In birth chart analysis, "Ravi Yoga" sometimes refers to specific planetary combinations involving the Sun. The Muhurta (electional astrology) Ravi Yoga discussed on this page is formed when the transiting Sun occupies one of 9 specifically auspicious nakshatras - making it a time-based yoga used for choosing auspicious beginnings, not a natal chart configuration.

How is Ravi Yoga different from Ravi-Pushya Yoga?

Ravi-Pushya Yoga is a subset of Ravi Yoga. Ravi Yoga is the broad category - Sun in any of 9 auspicious nakshatras (~120-140 days/year). Ravi-Pushya Yoga is the specific case when the Sun is in Pushya (~13 days/year). Every day of Ravi-Pushya Yoga is also a day of Ravi Yoga, but Ravi Yoga is active 9 times more frequently. Ravi-Pushya is considered more potent because Pushya is the king of nakshatras, but Ravi Yoga in any of the other 8 nakshatras is still significantly auspicious.

Which of the 9 nakshatras is most powerful for Ravi Yoga?

There is general agreement in classical Jyotisha that Pushya is the most powerful nakshatra for solar transit (creating Ravi-Pushya Yoga). Among the remaining eight, Hasta and Anuradha are frequently cited as especially auspicious, particularly for commerce and steady achievement respectively. Ashwini and Punarvasu are excellent for beginnings and renewal. The quality varies: Hasta favours skilled work and craftsmanship; Chitra favours architecture and artistic projects; Moola is powerful for deep investigation but requires care. Overall, the "best" nakshatra depends on the nature of the activity.

Can I do the same activities on all 9 Ravi Yoga nakshatras?

The core activities - government work, career advancement, solar worship, gold, authority - are auspicious across all 9. However, each nakshatra adds its own specific quality. Hasta (Moon-ruled) adds dexterity and craftsmanship. Anuradha (Saturn-ruled) adds endurance and friendship. Chitra (Mars-ruled) adds brilliance and innovation. Punarvasu (Jupiter-ruled) adds renewal and restoration. For best results, match the activity's nature to the nakshatra's speciality while remaining within the general Ravi Yoga framework.

Does Ravi Yoga on a Sunday carry extra power?

In some regional muhurta traditions, when Ravi Yoga falls on a Sunday (Ravivara), it is considered amplified - the Sun's day reinforcing the Sun's nakshatra transit. This combination is sometimes called "Ravi-Ravi Yoga" or simply "Surya Yoga." While not a formally defined yoga in Muhurta Chintamani, the classical principle of Vara-Nakshatra resonance does support this. For solar-specific activities (Surya puja, gold purchase, government), Sunday + Ravi Yoga is particularly favourable.

Does Ravi Yoga override Rahu Kaal?

No. Rahu Kaal applies every day and is calculated from sunrise regardless of the prevailing muhurta yoga. Ravi Yoga does not override or cancel Rahu Kaal. Always plan important activities outside the Rahu Kaal window for your location, even when Ravi Yoga is active. The combination of Ravi Yoga + Abhijit Muhurta (midday window) on a day without Rahu Kaal interference is especially potent.

How do I use Ravi Yoga practically in daily life?

Ravi Yoga is the most accessible of all muhurta yogas - active approximately 120-140 days per year. For practical use: (1) Check whether the current day falls within a Ravi Yoga period using this page. (2) If active, use the morning hours from sunrise through Abhijit Muhurta for any new important activity. (3) For solar activities (Surya puja, career decisions, authority-related matters), these are naturally amplified. (4) Even if you cannot perform elaborate rituals, simply beginning a task with clear intention during Ravi Yoga is considered to imbue it with solar blessing.

Is there a classical source for the 9 Ravi Yoga nakshatras?

The Ravi Yoga nakshatra list appears in Muhurta Chintamani, one of the authoritative classical texts of Muhurta Shastra, written by Rama Daivagya (circa 17th century CE). The text lists specific Vara-Nakshatra combinations that form Sarvarthasiddhi Yoga and separately discusses solar nakshatras for Ravi Yoga. Some commentators on earlier texts (including Jataka Parijata) cite a slightly extended list of 11 or 13 nakshatras. The 9-nakshatra list on this page follows Muhurta Chintamani as the primary authority.

रविः शुभनक्षत्रगः सर्वसिद्धिप्रदः

raviḥ śubhanakṣatragaḥ sarvasiddhipradaḥ

“The Sun in an auspicious nakshatra bestows all accomplishments.”

Ravi Yoga is the most democratic of all muhurta yogas - available to everyone approximately 120 days per year. It asks only for awareness: to know when the Sun's sovereign light is passing through a favourable constellation, and to align your most important actions with that natural window of celestial grace.
