Restrictions During Ravi-Pushya

Marriage Ceremonies

विवाह — Vivah

  • Marriage (Vivah) ceremonies
  • Engagement rites
  • Ring ceremonies
  • Marriage-related legal contracts

Pushya Nakshatra is explicitly prohibited for marriage in Muhurta Chintamani and most regional traditions. This holds during Ravi-Pushya.

Negative Tantric Rites

अभिचार कर्म

  • Maran (death rituals)
  • Ucchatan (separation rites)
  • Vidveshan (enmity rituals)
  • Any intention to cause harm

Solar auspiciousness amplifies all intentions. Harmful actions rebound more severely during elevated yogas.

Disputes & Litigation

विवाद

  • Filing of court cases
  • Adversarial contract signing
  • Initiating arguments or disputes
  • Legal proceedings against others

Note: Ravi-Pushya does not override Tuesday or Saturday restrictions for vehicles and iron purchases. For full Panchang override, combine with Sarvarthasiddhi Yoga.

Inauspicious Beginnings

अशुभ

  • First rites after a death
  • Mourning ceremonies
  • Rites of ending and separation
  • Deliberate destruction of relationship

The auspicious solar-Pushya energy creates incongruence with sorrowful or destructive beginnings.

Eclipse Override

ग्रहण

  • Any new enterprise during solar eclipse
  • Any new enterprise during lunar eclipse
  • Yoga cannot be used during eclipse

No muhurta yoga — however powerful — overrides an eclipse (Grahan). Eclipse cancels ALL auspicious yogas without exception.

Scholarly Questions & Answers

These are three distinct yogas. Ravi Yoga (also called Surya Yoga) is formed when the Moon transits the nakshatra owned by the weekday's ruling planet — for example, Moon in Krittika on Sunday. Pushya Yoga is a Panchang yoga formed by a specific Tithi-Vara-Nakshatra combination, or when the Moon is in Pushya. Ravi-Pushya Yoga is entirely different: it occurs when the SUN ITSELF transits through Pushya Nakshatra — a solar transit lasting ~13 consecutive days, once per year. It is the Sun's own annual visitation of the most auspicious nakshatra.

Some classical commentators restrict "Ravi Pushya" specifically to the Sunday that falls within the Sun's transit of Pushya, arguing that Ravi means "Sunday" as well as "Sun." However, the broader and more widely followed tradition in Jyotisha Shastra considers every day of the Sun's ~13-day transit of Pushya Nakshatra to constitute Ravi-Pushya Yoga — a period of sovereign solar grace, not limited to one day. Our calculation follows the full transit period.

The Sun transits Pushya Nakshatra exactly once per year. Unlike Guru Pushya (which occurs on Thursdays when the Moon is in Pushya — several times per year) or Dwipushkar/Tripushkar (which involve lunar timing), Ravi-Pushya is purely solar. The Sun never goes retrograde, so it passes through Pushya continuously for approximately 13–14 days each year, typically in mid-to-late July in the tropical calendar.

The Sun (Ravi) is the karaka (significator) of gold in Vedic astrology — the solar metal, Swarna, mirrors the Sun's colour and radiance. When the Sun transits Pushya (the "nourisher"), the combined energy is said to amplify the durability, prosperity, and spiritual charge of gold acquired during this period. Muhurta Chintamani's guidance on Swarna-kray (gold purchase) is strongly aligned with nakshatras governed by benefic deities, and Pushya — ruled by Brihaspati, preceptor of the gods — is considered supreme for this purpose.

Within the Ravi-Pushya window, the most elevated moment is Abhijit Muhurta — the midday window (~11:36 AM to 12:24 PM local time). When Abhijit Muhurta falls within the Ravi-Pushya transit, and additionally on a Thursday (creating an overlap with Guru energy), classical texts describe it as a "Maha Muhurta" of the first order. Sunrise is also auspicious since the solar energy is ascending and most potent. The first Pada of Pushya (93°20' – 96°40' sidereal) is the most powerful sub-period.

Marriage is traditionally prohibited under Pushya Nakshatra in most regional Jyotisha traditions, including those following Muhurta Chintamani's explicit guidelines. This prohibition extends to Ravi-Pushya Yoga. The reason given in classical texts is that Pushya's deity is Brihaspati — the bachelor preceptor — and its symbolism (the udder) relates to nourishment rather than union. Most established muhurta authorities unanimously exclude Pushya from the list of nakshatras suitable for Vivah Muhurta.

The Ravi-Pushya period is exceptionally auspicious for beginning any long-term spiritual commitment: mantra Diksha (initiation), establishing a regular puja routine, beginning scripture study, or undertaking a Vrata (observance). The Sun's sovereign light in Pushya's nurturing field creates an energetic template that is said to sustain the practice long after the yoga period ends. Starting at sunrise and facing east — the Sun's direction — adds amplification.

रविः पुष्येण सम्युक्तः सर्वकार्यं प्रसाधयेत्

raviḥ puṣyeṇa samyuktaḥ sarvakāryaṃ prasādhayet

“The Sun united with Pushya accomplishes all endeavours.”

Ravi-Pushya Yoga reminds us that the Sun's annual journey through the King of Nakshatras is a cosmic renewal — a time when the soul of the universe pours its illuminating grace into the field of nourishment. Those who align their actions with this sacred window participate in the oldest form of time-keeping known to human civilisation.
