Griha Pravesh Muhurta
Auspicious Timing for the Housewarming Ceremony
What is Griha Pravesh?
Griha Pravesh (also called Vastu Pravesh) is the sacred ceremony of entering a new home for the first time. It is one of the sixteen Samskaras (rites of passage) recognized in Vedic tradition and is performed to invoke divine blessings upon the dwelling, to harmonize the home with Vastu (cosmic spatial order), and to establish a positive and protective energy field for the family residing within.
The ceremony typically involves rituals such as Vastu Puja, Ganesha Puja, Navagraha Stuti, Havan (sacred fire offering), and the ceremonial lighting of the hearth. The Muhurta (auspicious moment) for the first physical entry of the family into the home is what Griha Pravesh Muhurta refers to.
Three Types of Griha Pravesh
Classical Vastu and Muhurta texts identify three distinct categories of Griha Pravesh, each with its own ritual requirements and relative importance:
Apanapravesh (Nava Griha Pravesh)
First entry into a newly built or newly purchased home
This is the most significant category and requires the most careful Muhurta selection. It applies when a family enters a home for the very first time. All criteria described in this guide apply fully to this type. Apanapravesh is considered the most auspicious and is accompanied by complete Vastu Puja and Havan.
Dwiraagarman (Punar Pravesh)
Re-entry after renovation, repairs, or extended absence
This applies when a family re-enters their own home after a significant renovation, structural repair, or after having vacated the premises for an extended period. A simplified but still auspicious Muhurta is selected. The Puja is shorter but the directional and Tithi criteria still apply.
Sashayyaapravesh
Entry with the family intending to sleep in the home overnight
This is the mildest category and refers to the first overnight stay in a home, particularly when the ceremonial entry has already been done separately or when circumstances require a simpler transition. The focus is on selecting an auspicious Vara and Nakshatra for the first night of residence.
Auspicious Months for Griha Pravesh
The classical Muhurta texts prescribe specific solar months as most favourable for Griha Pravesh. These months are associated with strong solar energy, benign seasonal conditions, and favourable planetary periods:
Magha
Jan / Feb
Phalguna
Feb / Mar
Vaishakha
Apr / May
Jyeshtha
May / Jun
Shravana month is considered acceptable in some regional traditions, especially in Northern India, as it is associated with Lord Vishnu's blessings. The months of Ashwin and Kartika are sometimes used but require additional assessment. Adhika Masa and the months of Bhadrapada and Pausha are generally avoided.
Auspicious Nakshatras for Griha Pravesh
The Nakshatra occupied by the Moon on the day of Griha Pravesh is a key determinant of the quality of the Muhurta. The following Nakshatras are prescribed as auspicious:
Vara (Weekday) Selection
Each day of the week is governed by a planetary deity and carries a distinct energy. The following Varas are recommended for Griha Pravesh, each conferring specific benefits:
Ravivara (Sunday)
Sun
Wealth, prominence, and royal comforts in the home
Somavara (Monday)
Moon
Happiness, emotional harmony, and domestic peace
Guruvara (Thursday)
Jupiter
Prosperity, wisdom, growth, and divine protection
Shukravara (Friday)
Venus
Luxury, beauty, comforts, and harmonious family relationships
Tuesday (Mangalavara, ruled by Mars) and Saturday (Shanivara, ruled by Saturn) are generally avoided for Griha Pravesh as they are associated with conflict, disputes, accidents, and delays respectively.
Tithi Criteria for Griha Pravesh
Shukla Paksha (the waxing fortnight of the Moon) is preferred for Griha Pravesh, as increasing lunar energy supports growth and abundance in the new home.

Vastu Directional Considerations
Vastu Shastra prescribes that the direction of entry and the placement of key spaces within the home aligns with cosmic and elemental energies. During Griha Pravesh, the following directional principles from Vastu are observed:
The main entrance of the home ideally faces North, East, or North-East (Ishaan corner). These directions are governed by Kubera (wealth), Indra (power and prosperity), and the divine Ishaan Deva respectively.
Entry from the North-East is considered most auspicious as it is the direction of divine energies and cosmic light. The ceremony should begin with facing this direction when crossing the threshold.
South-facing entrances require special Vastu remedies (Vastu Shanti Puja) before or alongside the Griha Pravesh as the South is the direction of Yama (the lord of death) and is considered challenging from a Vastu perspective.
The fire element (Agni) should ideally be established in the South-East quadrant of the home (Agneya corner). Lighting the kitchen hearth or ceremonial fire in this direction during the ceremony honors the fire deity and activates the home's energy.
The family should enter the home carrying auspicious items: a Kalasha (water pot) symbolizing abundance, a lamp (Diya) symbolizing light and prosperity, and grains symbolizing nourishment. The woman of the household traditionally enters first.
