The Sacred Full Moon Observances of the Hindu Calendar
Significance of Purnima
Purnima (Sanskrit: Purnima or Purnimasi, meaning "full") is the 15th and final Tithi of the Shukla Paksha (waxing fortnight). It marks the culmination of the Moon's monthly journey from new moon to full moon. In Vedic thought, the full moon represents the complete flowering of Soma (lunar nectar), associated with the mind (Manas), emotions, and consciousness.
The Grihyasutras prescribe the Purnimasa Homa (full moon sacrifice) as one of the five great sacrifices (Pancha Mahayajnas) to be performed by every householder. Even those who cannot perform the full ritual are encouraged to fast, pray, and offer charity on Purnima. Satyanarayan Puja (worship of Lord Satyanarayana, a form of Vishnu) is traditionally performed on Purnima throughout India.
Each monthly Purnima bears the name of the lunar month it occurs in. The month name is determined by the solar sign the Sun occupies at the time of the full moon. This naming system connects the lunar and solar calendars and ensures the Purnima's name reflects the seasonal and astrological context of the year.
Major Purnimas of the Year
Guru Purnima (Ashadha)
The most sacred day for honoring the spiritual Guru (teacher). On this day, Maharishi Veda Vyasa, compiler of the Vedas and Puranas, is traditionally worshipped. Disciples visit their Gurus, offer reverence, and receive blessings. Buddhist tradition also observes this day as the anniversary of the Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath.
Sharad Purnima (Ashwin)
The harvest full moon of autumn. According to the Bhagavata Purana, Lord Krishna performed the Maha Raas dance (Maha Raasa Leela) with the Gopis on this night. The full moon of Sharad Purnima is believed to emit Amrita (nectar) directly from the lunar disc. Kheer (rice pudding) is kept outdoors in moonlight overnight and consumed as Prasad the next morning.
Kartik Purnima (Dev Diwali)
The most auspicious Purnima of the year according to the Skanda Purana. Called Dev Diwali (festival of lights of the gods), celestial beings are said to descend to the sacred rivers to bathe. Bathing in the Ganga or any sacred river at dawn on Kartik Purnima is said to grant merit equivalent to performing Ashwamedha Yajna (horse sacrifice).
Magha Purnima
The full moon of the holy month of Magha. During the Kumbh Mela period, this Purnima is one of the most auspicious bathing (Snan) dates. Charity (dana) performed on Magha Purnima is said to bear hundredfold fruit. Traditional observance includes early morning river bath, Satyanarayan Katha, and feeding Brahmins.
Purnima Fasting Rules
Purnima fast begins at sunrise on the day of Purnima and ends the following morning after Parana (the fast-breaking time). During the fast, grains may be avoided or a single light meal may be taken, depending on the tradition followed. The most common observance is an evening fast after completing daily activities.
The fast is broken with Panchamrita (five nectars: milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, and sugar), fruits, and then a regular meal. On Kartik Purnima, some devotees observe a complete 24-hour fast with only water permitted, similar to Nirjala Ekadashi observance in its intensity.
