Vehicle Purchase Muhurta
Auspicious Timing for New Vehicle Acquisition
Vedic Perspective on Vehicle Purchase
In Vedic astrology, a vehicle (Vahana) is considered a significant acquisition that carries the planetary energy of the moment of purchase. The 4th house in a horoscope governs vehicles and conveyances. Planets placed in or aspecting the 4th house determine the nature of one's vehicles and experiences related to them. The 4th house lord's strength in the natal chart indicates whether the native will enjoy comfortable and safe vehicles throughout life.
Muhurta Chintamani dedicates a specific section to Vahana Kray Muhurta (vehicle purchase timing). The text emphasises that a vehicle purchased during an inauspicious Muhurta can be prone to accidents, mechanical failures, theft, or association with unfortunate events. Conversely, a vehicle purchased during an auspicious Muhurta serves the owner faithfully, provides comfortable journeys, and contributes to the owner's prestige and wealth.
The tradition of Vahana Puja (vehicle worship) is directly connected to Muhurta selection. When a new vehicle is received, a priest performs a brief ceremony invoking Ganesha (remover of obstacles on roads) and the deity of the ruling Nakshatra at the moment of first use. The vehicle is marked with a tilak (sacred dot), flowers are placed at the steering wheel, and coconut is broken in front of the vehicle before the first journey.

Tithi Criteria
The 1st (Pratipada), 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th Tithis are generally auspicious. The Rikta Tithis (4th, 9th, 14th) should be avoided as they are associated with conflict, separation, and loss. Amavasya (new moon day) and Krishna Chaturdashi (14th of dark fortnight) are specifically prohibited for major purchases.
Rahu Kaal must be strictly avoided on the day of vehicle purchase, regardless of other favourable factors. Even a strong Lagna and auspicious Nakshatra cannot fully offset Rahu Kaal for vehicle-related matters, as Rahu is associated with sudden mishaps on roads. Similarly, Yamaganda and Gulikai periods should be avoided for the actual handover or first drive of the new vehicle.
Vahana Puja Procedure
Vahana Puja begins with the placement of fresh flowers, a coconut, and incense at the front of the vehicle. The priest or head of household applies a kumkum (vermilion) tilak to the bonnet of the car and ties a lemon-chilli string at the front bumper to ward off the evil eye (Nazar).
The Ganesha Vandana is chanted, followed by brief prayers to the Sun (for safe daytime travel) and the Moon (for safe night journeys). In South Indian tradition, a small idol of Lord Murugan or Hanuman is placed on the dashboard. The coconut is broken in front of the front-left wheel as a symbol of breaking obstacles, and the vehicle is then driven in a clockwise circle (Pradakshina) before the first proper journey.
