The six Pushkar nakshatras — gateways of celestial nourishment, shared by both Dwipushkar and Tripushkar traditions

When all three conditions align at sunrise — Pushkar Vara, Pushkar Tithi, Pushkar Nakshatra — Tripushkar Yoga begins and lasts until any element changes. The yoga is active from that sunrise for as long as the Moon remains in the Pushkar nakshatra AND the Pushkar tithi continues.

Why So Rare

Why Tripushkar Is the Rarest Yoga

Tripushkar requires three independent astronomical cycles to align: the weekday (Thursday or Friday only), the Pushkar tithi (2nd, 7th, or 12th lunar day in either paksha), and the Moon in one of six Pushkar nakshatras. Each condition filters valid days independently — their intersection is genuinely rare.

Mathematical probability: approximately 3.1% of all days — translating to roughly 8–15 occurrences per year. However, specific powerful combinations (such as Uttarashadha on Thursday) may occur only once in several years.

Approximately 8–15 Tripushkar occurrences per year. Specific powerful vara–nakshatra combinations are considerably rarer.

What Makes Each Occurrence Special

The specific Pushkar Nakshatra determines the flavour of each Tripushkar occurrence. Not all Tripushkar days carry identical qualities.

Punarvasu on Thursday
Supreme for renewal, restoration, and returning to one's highest path. Aditi's grace combined with Jupiter's wisdom.
Uttarashadha on Thursday
Exceptionally powerful for leadership, governance, and long-term endeavours requiring enduring strength.
Vishakha on Friday
Ideal for marriage, partnerships, and goal-oriented devotion. Indra-Agni combined with Venus's sweetness.
Purvabhadrapada on Thursday
A rare combination for spiritual transformation, Diksha, and crossing from one phase of life to another.

Auspicious Activities

During Tripushkar, there are virtually no restrictions on auspicious activities. The three-fold Pushkar blessing overrides most muhurta afflictions — making this yoga suitable for almost any significant beginning.

Precautions · सावधानी

Cautions & Limitations

Sinful and Violent Acts

Tripushkar amplifies ALL actions threefold, including harmful ones. Negative karma begun on this day is compounded by the yoga's power.

  • Violence of any kind
  • Deceit and manipulation
  • Theft
  • Harmful or destructive rituals

Litigation and Revenge

The three-fold Pushkar quality is inherently nourishing and creative. Actions rooted in conflict work directly against its nature.

  • Filing legal cases
  • Starting disputes
  • Acts of revenge
  • Divisive and destructive acts

Disrespecting Gurus and Elders

Thursday is Guru's day. Disrespecting teachers or elders on Thursday Tripushkar carries compounded karmic weight per classical texts.

  • Disrespecting the guru
  • Abandoning elders
  • Breaking sacred vows
  • Renouncing initiated paths

Eclipse override:If a solar or lunar eclipse coincides with Tripushkar, the eclipse takes absolute precedence. No yoga — however powerful — can override Grahan. Avoid all new beginnings during eclipse periods without exception.

Frequently Asked Questions

Scholarly Questions & Answers

Classical texts place Tripushkar among the highest-grade muhurta yogas, but the question of "most powerful" depends on the activity. Tripushkar, with all three Pushkar conditions on benefic days (Thursday/Friday), represents the complete three-fold alignment of time. For marriage, Griha Pravesh, and spiritual initiation, it is generally regarded as supreme. For purely commercial or worldly completion, Sarvarthasiddhi may be more specifically prescribed by certain classical texts.

No. The Pushkar tithis for Tripushkar are the 2nd, 7th, and 12th lunar days in both Shukla and Krishna Paksha (tithi numbers 2, 7, 12, 17, 22, 27). Amavasya is the 30th tithi. Since Amavasya is not among the Pushkar tithis, Tripushkar cannot coincide with Amavasya by definition.

Eclipse overrides ALL auspicious yogas without exception - including Tripushkar. Classical texts are unanimous: no muhurta, however powerful, can begin a new enterprise during Grahan (eclipse). The eclipse period extends from the first external contact until the last contact, plus an additional purification period that varies by tradition. Never begin anything of significance during an eclipse, regardless of which yogas are active.

Pitru Tarpanam is traditionally performed on Amavasya, which cannot coincide with Tripushkar (different tithis). However, on Krishna Paksha Saptami (tithi 22) or Krishna Dwadashi (tithi 27) Tripushkar days, performing ancestral rites alongside auspicious new beginnings is considered especially meritorious by some traditions. The Pushkar quality is said to send merit upward to ancestors as well as forward into new endeavours.

Our dates are calculated for New Delhi using Swiss Ephemeris and Lahiri Ayanamsha. Because nakshatra and tithi change at sunrise (not midnight), your location matters - particularly if you are in a different timezone or far from the reference meridian. For critical decisions like marriage or Griha Pravesh, always verify with a local panchang or consult a qualified jyotishi who can calculate for your exact location and birth chart.

This depends on the nature of the event and how far the next Tripushkar is. The classical guidance is: if an event can reasonably wait for a superior muhurta, doing so is worthwhile. However, if waiting is impractical - or if other factors like Abhijit Muhurta, personal astrological timing, or family circumstances are highly favourable - proceeding on a good muhurta (even without Tripushkar) is entirely valid. Tripushkar is a gift when it appears; it is not a prerequisite for success.

The term 'Tripushkar Yoga' as a specifically named compound yoga belongs to the Muhurta Shastra tradition - a post-Vedic branch of Jyotish. The concept of Pushkar (sacred, lotus-like) pervades Vedic and Puranic literature, but the systematic calculation of Pushkar Vara, Tithi, and Nakshatra as a three-fold yogic alignment is first elaborated in texts like Muhurta Chintamani and Jataka Parijata. According to Puranic tradition, Narada described this alignment to Brahma as the moment when the cosmic lotus blooms in time itself.

त्रिपुष्करे सर्वं सिद्ध्यति त्रिगुणम्

tripuṣkare sarvaṃ siddhyati triguṇam

“In Tripushkar, all is accomplished threefold”

The three elements correspond to the three creative forces — Vara (Shiva, transformation), Tithi (Brahma, creation), Nakshatra (Vishnu, preservation). When all three align, the Trimurti itself witnesses your beginning. What is begun in Tripushkar partakes of creation, preservation, and transformation simultaneously.

When the three Pushkar elements converge — the sacred weekday, the sacred lunar day, and the Moon in a sacred constellation — time itself becomes the throne of divine blessing. What you begin on Tripushkar is witnessed by three cosmic forces at once. Choose carefully. Act with reverence. Let your beginning be worthy of this rare gift.
