Sacred Mythology

पौराणिक कथा

Shravana's mythology encompasses two of the Vedic tradition's most profound themes: the sacred act of divine listening as the foundation of all wisdom, and Vishnu's three cosmic strides that traversed all of creation in a single breath of cosmic compassion.

Vamana and Trivikrama, Vishnu's Three Strides

When the demon king Bali had conquered all three worlds through his extraordinary generosity and righteousness, a generosity so great it threatened to unbalance the cosmic order, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin. Approaching Bali during a grand yajna, the tiny Vamana requested only three strides of land. Bali, honouring his vow of generosity, agreed instantly. Vamana then revealed his Trivikrama form and grew to fill the cosmos. His first stride covered the earth, his second stride covered the heavens. For his third stride, there was no world remaining. Bali, recognising the divine, offered his own head. Vishnu gently pressed Bali to the netherworld, honouring his virtue while restoring cosmic balance. Shravana's symbol of three footprints carries this entire story, the three strides that span all worlds, the preservation of cosmic dharma through an act of profound grace.

Shravana, Sacred Hearing as the Path to Liberation

In the Upanishadic tradition, the path to moksha is defined through three stages: Shravana (hearing the sacred teachings), Manana (reflecting deeply upon what was heard), and Nididhyasana (absorbing the teaching into direct, lived experience). Shravana, sacred hearing, is the first and foundational stage. Without it, all subsequent spiritual practice lacks the necessary seed. The Chandogya Upanishad, the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, and the Mundaka Upanishad all emphasise that the highest truths must be received through the ear from a qualified teacher, that the sacred vibration of spoken wisdom carries a dimension of transmission that no written text can replicate. Shravana nakshatra is the cosmic representation of this foundational practice.

Nada Brahman, The Universe as Sacred Sound

The deeper mythological-philosophical context of Shravana is the Vedic teaching of Nada Brahman, the universe as sacred sound. In Vedic cosmology, creation began with the primordial sound AUM, which differentiated into all the subsequent vibrations that constitute the material world. To truly hear is to touch the creative matrix of existence. The ear is therefore a sacred instrument, not merely a sensory organ but a portal into the fundamental vibrational nature of reality. Shravana natives are born with this ear. Their calling is to hear what others cannot, to bring back from the depths of listening what humanity needs to hear.
