Stories & Deity Wisdom
The most celebrated myth of Rohini comes from the Shiva Purana. Chandra (the Moon) was married to all 27 Nakshatras, the 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapati. But Chandra was hopelessly, obsessively devoted to Rohini alone, neglecting his other 26 wives. The scorned Nakshatras complained to their father Daksha, who repeatedly warned Chandra to honor all his wives equally. When Chandra refused, Daksha cursed him to waste away, which is why the Moon waxes and wanes eternally. Lord Shiva eventually mitigated the curse, allowing the Moon to recover every fortnight. This myth reveals Rohini's supreme beauty and magnetic attraction, even the Moon himself cannot resist her.
