Bhava Bala — three-component house strength system
Maharishi Parashar's Statement · महर्षि पाराशर का कथन
“Maharishi Parashar gives three values for each house: Bhavadhipathi Bala (house lord's strength), Bhava Dig Bala (directional strength), and Bhava Drishti Bala (aspectual strength). The synthesis of these three with the planets in the house gives the complete picture of each life department.”
Key Insight · मूल सिद्धांत
Jupiter (Guru) and Mercury receive FULL aspect credit in Bhava Drishti Bala — while all other planets receive only 1/4. Parashar's message: the energies of wisdom (Jupiter) and discrimination (Mercury) are the greatest protectors of any life area they bless. Where Jupiter or Mercury aspect strongly — Prarabda Karma's negative effects are substantially reduced.
House System · भाव पद्धति
Classical texts advocate Equal House Division for all Bhava delineation. The Bhava Madya (house midpoint) is the point of maximum strength in each house and all aspect calculations are based on the angular distance to this midpoint.
The strength of the house lord. The midpoint of each house falls in a zodiac sign, and the ruler of that sign is the lord of that house. The Shad Bala of that planet IS the Bhavadhipathi Bala — no separate calculation needed. A house whose lord is strong in Shad Bala has a powerful engine driving it.
High Adhipathi Bala → the house lord is capable of delivering the house's promised results. Low Adhipathi Bala → even if the house itself has other support, its lord cannot effectively mobilize those results. Always check the lord's Shad Bala first when judging any house.
Directional strength of the house — based on what type of sign occupies the house midpoint and how favorably it aligns with that house's natural direction. Maharishi Parashar classified signs into four types: Human (Manushya), Aquatic (Jala), Animal (Chatushpada), and Insect (Keeta). Each type has maximum power in a specific house direction.
Human signs · Max in 1st house
Human signs achieve maximum Dig Bala (60 Virupas) in the 1st house and zero strength in the 7th. These signs represent the intellect, communication, and human social capacity.
Aquatic signs · Max in 4th house
Aquatic signs achieve maximum Dig Bala in the 4th house. These signs represent emotional depth, home, and the nurturing quality — all 4th house themes.
Animal signs · Max in 10th house
Animal signs achieve maximum Dig Bala in the 10th house — the house of action, career, and worldly achievement. These signs bring drive and determination to the Karma Sthana.
Insect signs · Max in 7th house
Scorpio — the only insect sign — achieves maximum Dig Bala in the 7th house of partnership, marriage, and the 'other.' This deeply transformative sign finds its full expression in the house of relationships.
Strength reduces by 10 Virupas for every house away from the maximum position, reaching zero at the opposite house (6 houses away). Scale: 60V (maximum prominence) → 50V → 40V → 30V (midway) → 20V → 10V → 0V (opposite — no directional strength).
The net aspectual energy received by each house midpoint (Bhava Madya) from all planets in the chart. Benefic planets contribute positive Drishti Bala; malefic planets contribute negative. This is the most karmic of the three components — it reveals Prarabda Karma operating on each life area.
Jupiter and Mercury - Full Aspect Credit
Jupiter and Mercury — FULL aspect value is taken for Bhava Drishti Bala calculation. This is Parashar's profound statement: the planet of spiritual wisdom (Jupiter) and intellectual discrimination (Mercury) have maximum capacity to protect and enhance any house they aspect. They can counteract negative Prarabda Karma in a Bhava.
Other Planets - One Quarter (1/4)
For all other planets — only ONE QUARTER (1/4) of the aspect value is taken. Moon and Venus contribute 1/4 as benefics; Saturn, Mars, and Sun contribute 1/4 as malefics. This ensures Jupiter and Mercury's protective role is uniquely prominent.

Mars

Bhava Drishti Bala is linked to Prarabda Karma — the karmic consequences carried from past lives. When a Bhava has negative Drishti Bala, the individual may face challenges in that life area without an apparent cause from their current life actions. This is not punishment — it is the Karmic debt being honored. Awareness is the first step to conscious navigation.
