Savitar, The Golden-Handed One
Savitar is one of the Adityas, the twelve solar deities, but his role is unique: while Surya is the ruling, illuminating Sun and Mitra is the diplomatic Sun of covenants, Savitar is the creative, inspiring Sun who sets all things in motion. His name comes from the root 'su' meaning 'to set in motion' or 'to impel.' He is the divine impulse that moves the hand of the craftsman, inspires the mind of the poet, and initiates the gesture of the healer.
The Golden Hands, A Sacred Myth
One of the most significant myths associated with Savitar involves the loss and miraculous replacement of his hands. During the great sacrifice of Daksha, Virabhadra's attack resulted in Savitar losing his hands. The divine physicians, the Ashwini Kumaras (also the deity of Ashwini Nakshatra), replaced them with hands of pure gold. This myth carries a profound teaching: that sacred skill, when lost through carelessness or violence, can be restored and elevated through divine grace. The golden hands that Savitar received were more powerful than the original, healing and creating with luminous divine precision.
The Gayatri, The Supreme Mantra of Savitar
The Gayatri Mantra is one of the most sacred and ancient of all Vedic mantras, and it is specifically addressed to Savitar: 'Om Bhur Bhuva Svaha, Tat Savitur Varenyam, Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi, Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat', 'We meditate on the excellent light of the divine Savitar; may he illuminate our intellects.' The Gayatri connects directly to Hasta's essential nature: the prayer for divine light to guide the skilled hand and the sharp mind toward their highest creative expression.
The Hand as Sacred Symbol
The open human hand, Hasta's symbol, is one of humanity's most ancient and universal sacred symbols. The Hamsa (hand) appears across cultures as a symbol of divine protection and blessing. In Hindu iconography, the raised open hand gesture (Abhaya Mudra) means 'fear not, I protect you.' The hand that creates is the hand that heals; the hand that builds is the hand that blesses. Hasta natives embody this sacred understanding in every skilled, conscious act they perform with their gifted hands.
