The mythology of Ashwini Nakshatra is found throughout the Rigveda, Mahabharata, and the Puranas. The divine twin physicians, the Ashwini Kumaras, are among the most beloved deities of the Vedic pantheon.
The Birth of the Ashwini Kumaras
The story begins with Surya, the radiant Sun god, and his wife Sanjna (Consciousness). Sanjna, unable to bear the intensity of Surya's brilliance, created Chhaya (Shadow) as her double and fled to the forest, taking the form of a mare. When Surya discovered the deception, he transformed himself into a horse and followed. From this divine union between two celestial horses were born the Ashwini Kumaras, the twin divine physicians, eternally young and eternally swift.
The Healing of Chyavana Rishi
The most celebrated legend of the Ashwini Kumaras involves the ancient sage Chyavana. When the sage had grown so old that his body merged with the earth itself, the Ashwini Kumaras descended and restored him to magnificent youth. This miracle earned them the right to drink Soma, the nectar of immortality, alongside the gods, despite opposition from Indra.
The Restoration of Sight
The blind sage Upamanyu cried out to the Ashwini Kumaras in his darkness. They appeared and offered to restore his sight with a cake of pressed grain. The sage refused, saying he would accept nothing not first offered to his guru Ayoda-Dhaumya. The Ashwini Kumaras, delighted by his devotion, restored his sight regardless, and blessed him with divine knowledge.
Spiritual Meaning
The Ashwini Kumaras represent the principle of divine intervention, the miraculous healing that arrives with the speed of light. Their twin nature represents the duality of existence (day/night, birth/death) that the healer must navigate. Their horse form represents the vehicle of the soul, swift, powerful, and capable of crossing worlds.
