Rudra, Ardra's presiding deity, is the most ancient and terrifying form of Shiva. In the Rigveda, Rudra is the howling storm god, the archer whose arrows bring disease and death, yet also the supreme healer who alone can remove what his arrows have struck. He dwells in the cremation grounds and the wild forests, beyond the boundaries of civilized order. Yet Rudra is also the lord of medicinal herbs, his knowledge of poison is inseparable from his knowledge of the cure.
