गायत्री मन्त्र
Gayatri Mantra
The Mother of All Mantras
Rig Veda 3.62.10
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः
तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं
भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि
धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्
The Gayatri Mantra is addressed to Savitr, the solar source of consciousness. The mantra invokes the supreme luminous essence (bhargo devasya) and asks for it to illumine the intellect (dhiyo yo nah prachodayat) of the seeker. In the Sandhya Vandana tradition it is recited at the three junctions of the day, dawn, noon and dusk, accompanied by aachamana and arghya.
Among Jyotish remedies, Gayatri Japa is universally prescribed for affliction of Surya, Brihaspati, and for general purification of buddhi (intellect) and chitta (memory). The mantra has 24 syllables; classical authorities recommend reciting it 108 times daily as a minimum sadhana, ideally during Brahma Muhurta (96 minutes before sunrise).
