What is Shad Bala?
षड्बल (Shad Bala) literally means “six-fold strength.” It is the classical method for measuring every planet's power to produce its results in a horoscope. Defined exhaustively in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Shad Bala Adhyaya, this system recognises that a planet's strength is not a single quality but the sum of six distinct sources - each measuring a different dimension of its potency.
All values are measured in Shashtiamshas (virupas). Sixty shashtiamshas equal one Rupa. A planet's total Shad Bala in Rupas is compared against a BPHS-prescribed minimum to determine whether it is strong, average, or weak in the chart under analysis.

Positional strength - derived from where a planet stands in the zodiac and chart. Five sub-components combine: Uchcha Bala from proximity to exaltation, Sapta Vargiya from dignity across seven divisional charts, Ojayugma from odd/even sign placement, Kendradi from angular/succedent/cadent house position, and Drekkana from decanate preference.
Directional strength - each planet has a preferred cardinal direction. A planet is strongest when positioned in its preferred house and weakest in the opposite. The calculation is based on angular distance from the weakest direction.

Temporal strength - the time of birth determines which planets are strengthened. Day planets (Sun, Jupiter, Venus) are stronger during daytime; night planets (Moon, Mars, Saturn) during nighttime. The lunar phase (Paksha Bala) strengthens benefics in Shukla Paksha and malefics in Krishna Paksha. The weekday lord and planetary hora lord receive additional Bala.
Motional strength - a planet's speed relative to its mean daily motion. A retrograde (vakri) planet receives maximum Cheshta Bala of 60, as retrogression indicates the planet is closest to Earth and most energised. Sun and Moon substitute Ayana Bala here. Stationary planets receive minimum strength.
Natural inherent strength - a fixed hierarchy reflecting each planet's intrinsic luminosity and influence. These values never change, regardless of chart or birth time. The Sun, as the greatest luminary, holds maximum natural strength; Saturn, being the dimmest and slowest, holds minimum.
Aspectual strength - derived from the aspects a planet receives from others. Natural benefics (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, waxing Moon) contribute positive Drik Bala through their aspects; natural malefics (Sun, Mars, Saturn) contribute negative. Special aspects of Mars (4th, 8th), Jupiter (5th, 9th), and Saturn (3rd, 10th) are included at 3/4 weight.

Ishta Bala Thresholds
BPHS Chapter 27 prescribes the minimum Shad Bala (in Rupas) each planet must possess to be considered capable of fully delivering its results. A planet below its threshold is weakened and may fail to confer the results of its house lordships and karakatwas even when otherwise well-placed.

√(Uchcha Bala × Cheshta Bala)Measures how much good the planet can actively confer. A planet with high Uchcha Bala (near exaltation) and high Cheshta Bala (strong motion) will deliver excellent results in its dasha periods.
Kashta Phala कष्ट फल
Malefic / difficult results
√((60 - Uchcha) × (60 - Cheshta))Measures the planet's potential to cause difficulty or obstruction. A planet near debilitation with slow or stationary motion will yield a high Kashta Phala.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra
Shad Bala is defined exhaustively in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), the foundational text of Parashari Jyotish attributed to the sage Parashara. The Shad Bala Adhyaya (Chapter 27 onwards) devotes considerable depth to the calculation of all six components, their sub-divisions, and their application in chart interpretation and dasha phala.
उच्चस्था सप्तवर्गेषु ओजयुग्मकेन्द्रादिषु। दृक्केण बलमुक्तं स्यात् स्थानबलमितीरितम्॥

Reading Shad Bala Values
Fully capable of delivering its significations. In its dasha, the planet can confer health, wealth, relationships, or the domains of its house lords - whichever it rules. Look to such planets as primary sources of fortune.
Partially capable. Results may come but with some delay or dilution. The planet is not fully impotent but needs support from transit (gochara) or other planetary periods to fully manifest its potential.
Struggles to deliver its significations. In its mahadasha or antardasha, the native may experience setbacks related to the planet's karakatwas and house ownership. Remedies (ratna, mantra, daan) are traditionally prescribed to strengthen weak planets.
Acts as the primary engine of the chart. Its nature, house lordship, and karakatwa strongly colour the native's life direction, career, and personality - especially during its dasha period.
Represents the greatest area of vulnerability. Its significations may be chronically difficult for the native. Classical Jyotish prescribes specific remedies based on which planet is weakest.
