Gemstones by Rashi and Lagna: Classical Ratna Shastra Guide
By Pt. Dr. Pankaj Madhav
The prescription of gemstones in classical Jyotish is one of the most consequential and most frequently mishandled of all remedial interventions. A correctly prescribed gemstone, worn at the right time, in the appropriate metal, on the designated finger, can amplify a planet's beneficial influence in ways that produce tangible and sometimes remarkable results. An incorrectly prescribed gemstone can amplify precisely the wrong planetary energy, intensifying the very problems it was meant to resolve.
The central principle of classical Ratna Shastra is one that most commercial sellers prefer to obscure. Gemstones are not prescribed by the Moon sign or the Sun sign. They are prescribed by the Lagna, on the basis of the functional lordship of the planets in the individual horoscope. A ruby, which amplifies the Sun, may be ideal for a Leo Lagna native and contraindicated for a Scorpio Lagna native, even where both share an Aries Moon sign.
The Graha and Ratna Correspondence
Classical Jyotish assigns one primary gemstone to each of the nine grahas.
Surya, the Sun. Ruby, Manikya. Substitutes: red spinel, red garnet, star ruby.
Chandra, the Moon. Pearl, Moti. Substitutes: moonstone, white coral.
Mangal, Mars. Red coral, Moonga. Substitutes: carnelian, blood coral.
Budha, Mercury. Emerald, Panna. Substitutes: green tourmaline, peridot, green jade.
Guru, Jupiter. Yellow sapphire, Pushyaraga. Substitutes: yellow topaz, citrine, heliodor.
Shukra, Venus. Diamond, Heera. Substitutes: white sapphire, white zircon, clear quartz.
Shani, Saturn. Blue sapphire, Neelam. Substitutes: amethyst, blue spinel, lapis lazuli.
Rahu. Hessonite garnet, Gomed. Substitutes: zircon, orange grossular garnet.
Ketu. Cat's eye, Lehsunia or Vaidurya. Substitutes: yellow cat's eye, tourmaline cat's eye.
Prescription by Lagna
Aries Lagna, Mesha. Mars rules the Lagna, making red coral the primary stone. Jupiter rules the 9th of dharma and the 12th of moksha, so yellow sapphire is the beneficial secondary stone. The Sun rules the 5th, so ruby may be worn as a tertiary stone. Avoid blue sapphire, since Saturn rules the 10th and 11th in mixed lordship, hessonite for the nodal axis, and emerald, since Mercury, ruling the 3rd and 6th, is unfriendly to the Mars Lagna.
Taurus Lagna, Vrishabha. Venus rules the Lagna, making diamond the primary stone. Saturn rules the 9th in auspicious trinal lordship, so blue sapphire is strongly beneficial. Mercury rules the 2nd and 5th, so emerald is an excellent tertiary choice. Avoid ruby, since the Sun, ruling the 4th, is unfriendly to Venus, and exercise care with red coral, since Mars rules the 7th and 12th in complex lordship.
Gemini Lagna, Mithuna. Mercury rules the Lagna, making emerald the primary stone. Venus rules the 5th and 12th, so diamond benefits intelligence and creative work, though the 12th lordship introduces some dimension of expenditure. Saturn rules the 8th and 9th, so blue sapphire requires careful consideration. Avoid ruby, since the Sun rules the 3rd, and red coral, since Mars rules the 6th and 11th.
Cancer Lagna, Karka. The Moon rules the Lagna, making pearl the primary stone. Mars rules the 5th and 10th, forming a powerful Raja Yoga for this Lagna, so red coral is the strongest secondary stone. Jupiter rules the 6th and 9th, so yellow sapphire may be worn for the benefit of the 9th. Avoid blue sapphire, since Saturn rules the 7th and 8th and is highly inauspicious for the Cancer Lagna.
Leo Lagna, Simha. The Sun rules the Lagna, making ruby the primary stone. Jupiter rules the 5th and 8th, so yellow sapphire strengthens the powerful connection to the 5th. Mars rules the 4th and 9th, so red coral is beneficial. Avoid blue sapphire, since Saturn, ruling the 6th and 7th, is unfriendly to the Sun, while hessonite and cat's eye require careful individual assessment.
Virgo Lagna, Kanya. Mercury rules the Lagna, making emerald the primary stone. Venus rules the 2nd and 9th, so diamond is strongly beneficial for wealth and dharma. Saturn rules the 5th and 6th, so blue sapphire may be considered for the benefit of the 5th. Avoid ruby, since the Sun rules the 12th, and red coral, since Mars rules the 3rd and 8th.
Libra Lagna, Tula. Venus rules the Lagna, making diamond the primary stone. Saturn rules the 4th and 5th and is a Yogakaraka for Libra, so blue sapphire is the most powerful secondary stone. Mercury rules the 9th and 12th, so emerald may be worn for dharmic purposes. Avoid ruby, since the Sun, ruling the 11th, is unfriendly to Venus, and exercise care with red coral, since Mars rules the 2nd and 7th.
Scorpio Lagna, Vrishchika. Mars rules the Lagna, making red coral the primary stone. The Moon rules the 9th, so pearl is beneficial for dharma and fortune. Jupiter rules the 2nd and 5th, so yellow sapphire is an excellent secondary choice. Avoid diamond, since Venus rules the 7th and 12th in mixed lordship, take care with blue sapphire, since Saturn rules the 3rd and 4th, and avoid emerald, since Mercury rules the 8th and 11th.
Sagittarius Lagna, Dhanu. Jupiter rules the Lagna, making yellow sapphire the primary stone. Mars rules the 5th and 12th, so red coral may be worn for the benefit of the 5th. The Sun rules the 9th, so ruby is a powerful secondary stone for dharma and fortune. Avoid blue sapphire, since Saturn, ruling the 2nd and 3rd, is unfriendly to Jupiter.
Capricorn Lagna, Makara. Saturn rules the Lagna, making blue sapphire the primary stone. Venus rules the 5th and 10th and is a Yogakaraka, so diamond is the most powerful secondary stone. Mercury rules the 6th and 9th, so emerald requires careful consideration. Avoid ruby, since the Sun, ruling the 8th, is unfriendly to Saturn, and red coral, since Mars rules the 4th and 11th.
Aquarius Lagna, Kumbha. Saturn rules the Lagna, making blue sapphire the primary stone. Venus rules the 4th and 9th and is a Yogakaraka, so diamond is the strongest secondary stone. Mars rules the 3rd and 10th, so red coral may be considered for professional purposes. Avoid ruby, since the Sun, ruling the 7th, is unfriendly to Saturn.
Pisces Lagna, Meena. Jupiter rules the Lagna, making yellow sapphire the primary stone. Mars rules the 2nd and 9th, so red coral is beneficial for wealth and dharma. The Moon rules the 5th, so pearl is an excellent secondary choice. Avoid emerald, since Mercury, ruling the 4th and 7th, is unfriendly to Jupiter, and blue sapphire, since Saturn rules the 11th and 12th.
The Procedure for Wearing
Classical Ratna Shastra prescribes a specific procedure for activating a gemstone before it is worn.
The stone is set in the prescribed metal, gold for the Sun, Jupiter, and Venus, silver for the Moon, copper or gold for Mars, gold or silver for Mercury, and iron or a five-metal alloy for Saturn. The ring is worn for the first time on the day of the ruling planet, during the Hora, the planetary hour, of that planet, on the prescribed finger.
Before wearing, the stone is purified in raw milk, honey, and Ganga water, then placed before the deity associated with the planet, and the beeja mantra of the planet is recited 108 times. The stone is then placed on the finger during the auspicious planetary Hora.
The minimum effective weights given in the classical texts are ruby three carats, pearl five carats, coral six carats, emerald three carats, yellow sapphire three carats, diamond half a carat, blue sapphire two carats, hessonite six carats, and cat's eye three carats. These are minimum thresholds. Larger stones of high quality produce a stronger effect.
This guide follows the classical Ratna Shastra tradition. A gemstone must never be prescribed from the Sun sign or Moon sign alone. The correct stone, weight, metal, and timing are determined from the complete horoscope, and blue sapphire in particular should be worn only after thorough individual assessment.
